Lake Fork was the host of the first ever Great American Crappie Challenge in Texas on Saturday August 21, 2010. Lake Fork for years has been known as one of the best bass fishing lakes in the world but it is also home to a tremendous crappie fishery that is on the verge of exploding. By early afternoon on the day of the Challenge, the temperatures soared to over 100 degrees with full sun, but a gentle breeze kept it from being unbearable.
There was a strong showing from the club members of the Crappie Anglers of Texas who provided by the end of the day why they are the largest teaching crappie club in Texas. Anglers from six states came to see if they had what it took to become the first Texas Challenge Champion.
Lake Fork Marina and the Minnow Bucket provided tremendous facilities for the simultaneous weigh-in locations. Having both locations allowed the Challengers to fish their favorite spots on Fork and safely make it to the scales to weigh their biggest fish every two hours. David Chenault and the KMOO 99.9 crew kept everyone on and off the water up-to-date with the all the action and the winning weights.
It didn't take long to find out that Jay Don Reeve and his wife Rhonda Reeve were on some very, very good fish. In fact Jay Don Reeve was not only crowned the first ever Challenge Champion with a 2.16 lb Super Slab, he also weighed in 3 of the 4 largest crappie of the day. Jay said that he and his wife had located a huge school of suspended crappie the weekend before the Challenge and that they were still in the same spot the day of the Challenge. They used B'n'M Capps and Coleman double minnow rigs and vertically tightlined single rods. The fish were not aggressive and the bite was very light. Jay estimated that by the end of the day they had caught over40-50 slabs that were more than 1.5 lbs. Rhonda Reeve also did very well and finished 2nd in the 9-11 time slot. Once all the checks were handed out, the Reeves cashed in with 8 separate checks and received 4 of the 7 plaques handed out. Jay Don and Rhonda are the owners of the Finny Tribe (www.finnytribe.com), the best crappie tackle store in Texas.
A large crowd gathered in the Heritage Hall at the Best Western Trail Dust Inn and Suites in Sulphur Springs, TX for the Awards Ceremony and the $20,000.00 Bonus opportunity sponsored by the Sulphur Springs Department of Tourism. In less than an hour, the Super Slab Series handed out over $1300.00 in B'n'M Crappie Poles, Vicious crappie fishing Line, Tite-Lok rod holders, Kevin VanDam's Line and Lure Conditioner, Humminbird marine radio, Okuma reels, Sweetheart Crappie Baits, Lake Fork Trophy Lures new Live Baby Shad, and most importantly 48 checks to the top Challengers.
